A few days into the new year is still a great time to take stock of what we have achieved, and what may have fallen by the wayside. Most importantly, it’s a great opportunity to set leadership resolutions and intentions for the year ahead, and plan actions to help you stick to these resolutions. It’s a sad truth that only 8 percent of people who make New Year’s resolutions actually stick to their resolutions for the whole year.

If you hope to be great this year, this is the perfect time to set goals and determine what actions you want to take with your team, or what you want to do differently. Need a little inspiration? Here are seven actionable leadership goals to set for the New Year:

Listen More. You don’t have all the answers. Ask more questions, and really listen to the answers. Listening is one of the best ways to show team members that you value them and their opinions.

Create and communicate a compelling vision for your team. There’s only one vision you should focus on: a positive vision. Get yourself and your team excited about the future and how your vision will help you achieve it. Communicate with confidence that taking the right actions will make your team even more successful in 2017 than it was in 2016.

Set challenging goals. Mediocre goals are neither challenging nor motivating. Unclear goals distract from a positive vision. Before you end this week, each team member should have clear goals that are challenging and in alignment with departmental and overarching goals at your credit union.

Innovate more. As a leader your most important job is to work constantly on solving big problems and innovating new ways to do things. What is your innovation goal for 2017?

Make more mistakes than ever. When you innovate and create new things, you’re destined to make mistakes. Fail often, but fail early in the process. Would you rather pay the huge cost of not trying or the small cost of failure?

Expand your horizons. What new skills will you try to learn this year? Which conferences, besides THINK 17, will you attend this year? Any books you plan to read, new podcasts you will download or new content channels you will explore? Learning is critical to your success in a rapidly changing world, and it serves as an inspiring motivator to be and do more than ever.

Be a sharer and collaborator. Share your new knowledge, break down silos and demonstrate positive impact. Engage your team continuously. Inspire them to follow your lead and do the same.

Resolutions aren’t easy to keep going throughout the year. But if you keep them simple and attainable, they will have a significant positive impact on 2017. Have a wonderful year and let’s get to work.
