Lisa Gansky: Credit Unions Lead in the Sharing Economy
The world is changing, and credit unions have the secret sauce.
You read that correctly. In an interview with THINK, Lisa Gansky, author of The Mesh: Why the Future of Business Is Sharing, says the future of financial services is you: “The world has come around to the credit union secret sauce, which is being grounded in community and organized around the value of relationships and people.”
In a connected world, shared values and experiences rule – and nowhere in financial services do values and experiences align as closely with consumer sentiment than in the credit union industry. “Technology connects us and humanity unites us,” says Gansky. While people have grown comfortable with shared transportation (think Uber or Zipcar) or DIY hospitality (Airbnb), Gansky believes the collaborative model in financial services has yet to be leveraged. Will credit unions rise to the occasion?
“There’s an aspect of finance that’s social and an aspect that’s private,” Gansky says. “Historically, talking about money has been taboo. But there’s so much we can learn from each other. There’s so much credit unions can learn from each other.”
